Summary

A research done by the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) of the UN revealed that Sri Lanka generates 7,000 tonnes of solid waste per day, out of which 65 – 66 percent (by weight) consists of perishable organic material.

Accordingly, the average value of total food waste generated per day in the country is approximately 3,963 tonnes.
