Summary

In Colombo, Sri Lanka, urban wetlands provide flood protection, water purification, and livelihoods for many local communities. But wetland loss and degradation continue to threaten these precious ecosystems.

That’s why IWMI and partners are engaging local communities to promote the wise use of wetlands through the Darwin Initiative by identifying the sources of degradation and developing effective management solutions. This community science approach is increasing the biodiversity and livelihood resilience of Colombo’s wetlands.

Together, we can ensure that current and future generations will continue to benefit from wetland ecosystems.
