Every year, extreme weather events dominate the news in Sri Lanka. Projected climatic changes are expected to impact the country’s poorest and most vulnerable communities, exacerbating poverty and inequality. Smallholder farmers are among the most vulnerable to climate shocks. Now however, through an IWMI initiative, hi-tech solutions are reducing farmers’ financial burden that result from damage to crops, which can help them break free of the poverty trap.
IWMI has trialled similar schemes in other countries with proven results, including helping farmers to increase their resilience to flooding and other natural disasters, and supporting them on the road to recovery while boosting local wealth and profitability.
